A network which included more than fifty experts and twenty leaders of European projects was established through the first European seminar “ Mainstreaming Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in Science Education»
This annual seminar was held in Paris at the “Espace des Sciences Pierre-Gilles de Gennes” (ESPCI ParisTech) on the 23rd of September 2014. It was the first of three events promoted by the ENGAGE project (2014-2016) “Equipping the Next Generation for active engagement in Science” supported by the European Commission. Its aim is to create the opportunity for knowledge exchange among FP7 and H2020 projects and experts that contribute(d) to connecting Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE).
The European commission highlights that “RRI is an inclusive approach to research and innovation (R&I), to ensure that societal actors work together during the whole research and innovation process. It aims to better align both the process and outcomes of R&I, with the values, needs and expectations of European society.” The main keys identified in the RRI approach are Engagement, Gender Equality, Science Education, Ethics, Open Access and Governance.
Formal and informal education plays a crucial role in mainstreaming these approaches as scientific and social practices. By embedding responsible research and innovation and these 6 keys in the teaching practices, we contribute to the shaping of the vision of science in future generations. This is why several recent FP7 and H2020 projects, ENGAGE being one of them, put efforts into developing the links between RRI and Science Education with a special focus on IBSE. The Paris event intended to build a bridge connecting expertise and best practices in Responsible Research and Innovation and in Science Education.
Three themes were discussed in Paris: (1) Implementing RRI in the classroom: preparing the teachers; (2) Connecting Informal and formal learning for students’ RRI adoption (young citizens + parents); (3) Building RRI partnerships (Industry, Science Centres and Scientists).
The report of this seminar will be available at the end of this year and will be widely disseminated in the network and through our communities.
